Umrah & Ziyarah

All you need to know about Rituals to perform in Umrah and Ziyarah Al Masjid An Nabawi

The jogging or walking between the hills of Safa and Marwa, called Sa’i, is the remembrance of the struggle Hajar (AS) made in searching for water for her son, Ismael (AS). Such devotion and tenacity are a conventional part of both the Umrah and Hajj rituals.

Sa’i, when done with concentration and correct form, the physical act enables the pilgrims to also appreciate the historical side of the journey and the spirit of the struggle all in one. It’s, therefore, for this reason, that Al Maqam Travel is keen to ensure that it provides all the necessary assistance required during your Umrah trip.

The Significance of Sa'i:

As for Sa’i, it symbolizes hope, resilience, and faith in Allah (SWT). This journey of following the footsteps of Hagar (AS) helps the pilgrims feel the mercy and provision of Allah (SWT). Sa’i also emphasizes the role of turning to Allah (SWT) for assistance in difficult circumstances and putting one’s faith in the rightful planning of Allah.

Preparing for Sa'i:

When planning to go for Sa’i, make sure you have done Tawaf around the Kaaba and you are dressed in the Ihram for Hajj or any other respectable clothes for Umrah. Also, bring along a pair of comfortable shoes that are appropriate for walking.

  • Niyyah (Intention): When performing Sa’i, make a firm and genuine intention for the act, and do it purely for the pleasure of Allah (SWT).

  • Duaa (Supplications): Say prayers continuously throughout Sa’i while showing gratitude and making special requests.

  • Respectful Conduct: As you engage in Sa’i, make sure that you stay focused and avoid disruptions to the sanctity of the act.

Performing Sa'i Step-by-Step:

  • Starting Point: Start Sa’i at the top of Safa Hill. Remember invocations and lift your hands in invocation to Allah (SWT). Descend Safa at a moderate pace.

  • Between Safa and Marwa: Take a moderately fast pace when moving between the two hills, and jog slightly when covering the Al-Mas’aa areas. Say prayers during the entire walk.

  • Marwa Hill: The first step is to ascend Marwa Hill. Say prayers and raise your hand towards Allah (SWT) up to the highest point. This makes one round of Sa’i.
  • Number of Circuits: Sa’i is done by going seven times through a cycle within the area between Safa and Marwa hills.

Additional Considerations:

  • Elderly or Frail Pilgrims: Sa’i can also be done in a wheelchair for the elderly or the frail; those who may take a long time to walk from one hill to the other can ask someone to help them.
  • Congestion: It is important for individuals to respect the sanctity of the areas between Safa and Marwa, especially during social setups that attract many people, such as during certain seasons of the year. Remember to be polite and, if one is frequently invading others’ personal space, stay calm while moving through crowds.

  • Focus and Determination: When approaching Sa’i, exert oneself to focus, or it will be impossible to recite the supplications without faith. Take the experience as a blessing with the purpose of getting closer to the soul of Hagar (AS) and, in general, spiritual enhancement with Allah (SWT).

FAQs

How to enter Rawdah for ladies?

To the present, there is no specific door exclusive only for women to be able to access the Rawdah (Riyadh al-Jannah) in the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi) in Madinah.

Entry Points: Women are allowed into the mosque exclusively through the female entrance, which is typically indicated by a sign.

Location of Rawdah: The Rawdah is a garden-like area measuring about 100 meters long and 50 meters wide which is green with carpets and situated close to the Minbar and the enclosure where the tomb of the Prophet is also situated. Usually, it is possible to see it from afar.

Patience and Courtesy: Having a large compound to accommodate its congregation, the mosque becomes very busy, especially during festive occasions. Do remember to be patient and polite when you’re trying to move around the people by the Rawdah area.

Alternative Approach: In case the Rawdah is congested, it is okay to offer the prayers or even make invocations in another part of the mosque. The whole building – the mosque is held for being holy.
