Umrah & Ziyarah

All you need to know about Rituals to perform in Umrah and Ziyarah Al Masjid An Nabawi

The circular movement of the people moving around Al Kaaba also referred to as the house of Allah, is something that has a special place in the hearts of Muslims around the world. Tawaf or the clockwise movement around Al Kaaba, is one of the most significant components of Umrah as well as Hajj. Completing rounds of Tawaf with concentration and the right practice is a very personal and fruitful experience.

The Significance of Tawaf:

Tawaf represents unity, submission, and obeying the command of Allah (SWT). Tawaf also symbolizes submission to Allah (SWT) and the equality of the Muslim Ummah.

Preparing for Tawaf:

Wudu (ablution) As you prepare for Tawaf, make sure that your body is in a pure state by performing Wudu. Males should wear Ihram garments, the plain white clothes characteristic of pilgrimage. Women should avoid wearing revealing clothing that exposes their skin.
Niyyah (Intention): Before starting with Tawaf, ensure that you have the proper intention, free from any impurities in the heart, and simply seek Allah’s (SWT) approval.
Duas (Supplications): Saying prayers during Tawaf, being thankful while begging for something from your Lord.
Respectful Conduct: When performing Tawaf, remain fully focused with respect towards the ritual and do not engage in distractions such as talking.

Performing Tawaf Step-by-Step:

Starting Point: First of all, start Tawaf at the Hajar al-Aswad (Black Stone) by extending the right hand and, if one can, touch it.
Circumambulation: Go around it seven times while Al Kaaba should be on your left side. Tawaf al-idhtibat: walk fast during the first three circuits and Tawaf al-istiwa: normal pace during the last four circuits.
Yemeni Corner: Some can touch or even kiss the Yemeni corner (Rukn Yamani) when they get to it.
Al-Multazam: Al-Multazam is situated between the Hajar al-Aswad and the door of Al Kaaba and is considered one of the most blessed areas.
Maqam Ibrahim: After finishing seven times walking around Al Kaaba, perform two cycles of the unit of prayer near Maqam Ibrahim, the Station of Abraham (AS).

Drinking Zamzam Water: Tawaf is completed by drinking Zamzam water, which has the significance of conveying a purified soul and seeking Allah’s (SWT) bounty.

Additional Considerations:

Elderly or Frail Pilgrims: Unfortunately, some people cannot walk around Al Kaaba, especially the elderly or frail pilgrims, in which case Tawaf can be done on a wheelchair or with the help of someone strong.

Congestion: Sometimes, especially during the peak periods, the Mataf (circumambulation area) tends to be congested. Bear with people politely, especially while trying to maneuver through congested areas.

Focus and Devotion: When performing Tawaf, try to be attentive and gracefully read supplications from the heart. It should be a time when both parties involved reflect maturely and reconnect with Allah (SWT).

FAQs

What is the meaning of Tawaf Al Ziyarah?

Tawaf Al Ziyarah or Tawaf Al Ifadah means Visitation Circumambulation or Pouring Forth Circumambulation in English referring to a particular type of Tawaf that is required of pilgrims on the occasion of Hajj.

Tawaf: This is the practice of moving around the Kaaba, which is the square building in Makkah that is sacred and is tawaf – is a key part of both Umrah and Hajj.

Al Ziyarah: This means ‘visitation’. It means that the Tawaf is performed mostly as a visit to the holy Kaaba.

Al Ifadah: This translates to “Pouring Forth. ” While here, it depicts the many numbers of pilgrims who “pour forth” from Mina; another area in Makkah – to undertake this Tawaf right after completing the definite processes of Hajj.

Thus, Tawaf Al Ziyarah refers to the circle around the Kaaba offered exclusively by hajj performers after they undergo several important rites in Mina. It is done as a form of honor for both Al Kaaba and passing by it before leaving Makkah.
